How to Handle Summer Vacation Car Accidents

Home » Blog » How to Handle Summer Vacation Car Accidents

Jun 9, 2014 | Auto Accidents

With summer coming, people are busy planning their holidays. But most people do not anticipate getting into a car accident while on vacation. Yet eight of the ten deadliest days for driving are during the summer months: July 2nd, 3rd and 4th; August 3rd, 4th, 6th and 12th; and September 2nd. Auto accidents often happen when people are traveling out of town or out-of-state. It’s important to know how to handle an away-from-home accident so it does not ruin your summer vacation.

Before you hit the road, check your insurance policy to confirm that you are covered while traveling. Most policies cover you anywhere in the United States, U.S. territories and possessions and Canada. If yours does not, consider purchasing a rider for the duration of your trip.

If you are injured in a crash, call 911 for emergency assistance and seek medical attention. Then take the following steps:

  • Call your insurance company’s 800-number. A claims adjuster will be assigned to your case.
  • The adjuster can give you the name of a local tow company if needed. Your policy may or may not cover the cost of towing your car to your hometown.
  • If your car must be repaired where the accident occurred, most adjusters can direct you to a reputable repair shop in the area.
  • If your car is not drivable, your adjuster can arrange for a rental car if that is covered by your policy.

The state laws where the accident occurred govern the legal proceedings. However, both drivers’ insurance policies also affect the process. If you are a Pennsylvania driver injured in an  auto accident while on vacation, consult an attorney in Lancaster County for advice and guidance with your accident claim.
