May 29, 2015 | Workers' Compensation

construction accidentsWith Memorial Day now behind us, summer is just around the corner – and that means construction season. While we rely on construction workers to maintain our roads, bridges, sidewalks, and homes, we often take for granted just how dangerous a construction job can be.

In 2013, OSHA reported that out of the 4,101 worker fatalities in private industry jobs, 828 (20.2%) were in construction. The leading causes of injuries and fatalities on a construction site include falls, being struck by an object, electrocution, being caught in or between an object, exposure to toxic substances, construction vehicle accidents, scaffolding collapse, repetitive motion injuries, fire, and machinery injuries. The number of deaths from the first four types of accidents alone accounted for 57.7% of construction worker deaths that year.

If you have been injured while working on a construction site, or you have lost a loved one to a construction-related accident, you could be entitled to seek financial compensation via benefits from your workers compensation program, liability insurance, or a lawsuit against negligent third parties.

pic-after-injuryBecause you were injured on the job, you may have the right to workers compensation benefits, but this may not be the only type of compensation available to you. For example, if you were hit by a car while performing a road construction job, a claim can be pursued with the car insurance company of the driver who hit you. Similarly, if you were injured while repairing the roof of a house, you may have a premises liability claim against the homeowner. If a ladder or scaffolding malfunctioned and collapsed, you may have a products liability case against the manufacturer.

Our experienced lawyers will help you build your case to collect damages for burns, spinal cord injuries, head trauma, herniated disks, amputations, crush injuries, fractures, and lacerations. We also take on complex occupational disease cases associated with worksite exposure to harmful chemicals — including carcinogens and asbestos.
