A tragic single-vehicle crash in Juniata County, Pennsylvania claimed the life of a 15-year-old Columbia native in the early morning hours of February 1, 2026, according to the Juniata County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities identified the victim as Charles Elwood Raffensberger III, who died after the vehicle he was driving crashed and caught fire shortly after midnight.
Crash Details on Route 35 Near Hopple Lane
According to Pennsylvania State Police, Raffensberger was driving a 2009 Toyota RAV4 southbound on Route 35 near Hopple Lane when the vehicle reportedly left the roadway at a high rate of speed and struck a tree head-on.
Investigators say the crash occurred just after 12:00 a.m., and Raffensberger was the only occupant inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. Authorities reported that the vehicle caught fire after impact. Police have not confirmed whether the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
FaceTime Call Reported at Time of Crash
Investigators also indicated that Raffensberger was reportedly on a FaceTime call with a friend when the crash occurred. It remains unclear whether the call contributed to the collision. The crash remains under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police.
