What Do You Need in Your Motorcycle Insurance Policy?

Home » Blog » What Do You Need in Your Motorcycle Insurance Policy?

Oct 22, 2013 | Personal Injury

The state of Pennsylvania takes motorcycle insurance very seriously. This is primarily due to the high costs associated with motorcycle crashes, which are associated with the increased likelihood of injury or death when an accident occurs.

To ensure you are fully covered in the event of a crash, the following are required and recommended policies you should discuss with your insurance agent:

Required protections.

Pennsylvania state law requires minimal insurance coverage, including $15,000 for injuries or death occurring to a single person in an accident, $30,000 for injuries or death occurring to two or more people in an accident and $5,000 for property damage resulting from a single accident. All riders must carry this coverage to operate their motorcycles in the state.

Additional protections.

It is highly advisable to invest in protections beyond what’s minimally required by law. Riders should consider taking on additional uninsured or underinsured motorist insurance to cover bodily injuries resulting from a collision with at-fault motorists who do not have any or adequate insurance of their own. Many riders also expand their protection by adding on Extraordinary Medical Benefits, which cover medical expenses and rehabilitation costs exceeding $100,000.

Protecting your loved ones.

Although it’s difficult to think about, motorcycle riders are especially encouraged to purchase a funeral benefit as well. These benefits help cover funeral expenses for you or a family member if you die because of an accident. Riders should also consider purchasing accidental death benefits, which are paid to your heir or personal representative in case of death.

There’s nothing like hitting the open road on a motorcycle, but, before you do, look into comprehensive insurance coverage to protect you in those worst-case scenarios. And if you are involved in an accident, consult a skilled motorcycle accident attorney to talk about your options.
