Road Construction Brings Short-Term Dangers

Home » Blog » Road Construction Brings Short-Term Dangers

Dec 17, 2013 | Auto Accidents

You may have noticed the recent turnpike construction on Interstate 76 and the traffic it has caused, especially when the road was reduced to just one lane of traffic. If you’re a driver on a busy road or highway, these construction projects can be a time-consuming hassle that take time away from other, more productive things you could be doing.

It’s also important to note that these projects can be hazardous to motorists, especially if other drivers are neglectful in taking extra caution when moving through construction zones.

Areas where crews are working tend to have many distracting external factors we all need to pay attention to, but they should not affect the techniques we use to ensure safe roadways for everyone. There’s a difference between taking into account the surrounding environment and rubbernecking around construction, and drivers who cause accidents due to inattention may be held liable for any personal injuries or property damage that occur as a result. In short, every motorist on the road is responsible for safe driving, regardless of the conditions.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) recommends these tips for safe driving through construction zones:

  • Minimize distractions by giving your full attention to the road
  • Watch for certain indicators of changing traffic patterns, such as brake lights and traffic signs
  • Change lanes and merge safely to keep traffic flowing in the appropriate zones
  • Obey the posted speed limit and be aware of changes in speed

Following these tips and other common practices for safe driving will help to keep you and those around you safe, while also reducing the likelihood of fines or penalties for reckless driving. And remember: fines are double in construction zones!

If you are involved in an accident in a construction zone, get in touch with a Lancaster County accident attorney as soon as possible.
