What to do If You Have a Car Accident While Traveling for the Holidays

Home » Blog » What to do If You Have a Car Accident While Traveling for the Holidays

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, people are busy planning their meals, their entertainment…and their outfits. But not many people are planning and prepping for the packed roadways.

AAA is expecting 54.6 million people on the roads over the Thanksgiving holiday, especially on Wednesday.

Now is the time to plan ahead, and to give yourself extra time for travel. AAA predicts interstates around major cities to be 482% busier than usual during rush hour alone!

Auto accidents often happen when people are traveling out of town or out-of-state….and add to that, the congestion on the roads, and the unexpected can happen.  It’s important to know how to handle an away-from-home accident so it does not ruin your holiday.

Before you hit the road, check your insurance policy to confirm that you are covered while traveling. Most policies cover you anywhere in the United States, U.S. territories and possessions and Canada. If yours does not, consider purchasing a rider for the duration of your trip.

What to do if You Have a Car Accident While Traveling for Holidays

If you are injured in a crash, call 911 for emergency assistance and seek medical attention. Then take the following steps:

  • Call your insurance company’s 800-number. A claims adjuster will be assigned to your case.
  • The adjuster can give you the name of a local tow company if needed. Your policy may or may not cover the cost of towing your car to your hometown.
  • If your car must be repaired where the accident occurred, most adjusters can direct you to a reputable repair shop in the area.
  • If your car is not drivable, your adjuster can arrange for a rental car if that is covered by your policy.

The state laws where the accident occurred govern the legal proceedings. However, both drivers’ insurance policies also affect the process. If you are a Pennsylvania driver injured in an auto accident while on vacation, consult an attorney in Lancaster County for advice and guidance with your accident claim.

Working with an experienced law firm with proven success, time and time again, increases your chances for maximum compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Having the right law firm on your side can also help reduce the stress of the aftermath of an accident.
